5 out of 5 stars Most Fun Video Game Ever   August 12, 2009
S. Wilcox (Portland, OR)
If you have a shred of self-respect left, you'll buy this game today. I'm sure the graphics are much better on the Xbox or PS3, but the Wii's Wiimote and Motion Plus far outweigh the lesser video quality. I think my favorite thing about TW10 Wii is how realistic the game play is. My video game results are comparable to real life. In other words, this isn't the type of game where you can easily master its quirks and achieve greatness. The game is challenging. Plus, there are so many different aspects to the game - I can tell already that it will take me months, if not years, to get through everything. If I could only play one game for the rest of my life, I think this would be it. Even my 6 and 3-year-old daughters love to play it with me.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch controls   August 10, 2009

Great wii motionplus controls. Easy to play and enjoy the game. Weather channel feature is cool too as it matches your local weather conditions with the game. I highly recommend the game with wii motionplus.

3 out of 5 stars Just Not Realistic Enough   August 8, 2009
Greg Mizell (Colorado Springs, CO United States)

It's an ok game but the realism just isn't there. There are a lot of things missing as well.

For starters there is no practice tee/green. How are you supposed to practice without a practice tee? This was a huge oversight. In the club tuning area, you can hit shots to see how far they go but it's not really set up for practice. And there's no way to practice putting at all as far as I can tell.

The golfer applies spin to the ball by pressing the d pad and shaking the controller! LOL. You put spin on the ball *after* you hit it! Just ridiculous. You can turn this feature off but you cannot win that way. The game requires you to use this absurdity to be successful. The advanced swing option is a step in the right direction because it gives you a little bit of control over your shot by how you swing the club. Open the club face to fade/slice and close the club face to draw or hook it. However, this doesn't go far enough. You cannot adjust ball position, stance or grip. You have no control over the flight of the ball other than to select a full shot versus a punch shot. There is nothing in between. This takes away a lot of shots that would make the game a lot more playable.

My golfer has built his "spin" attribute up to 80% and yet pitching wedges roll off the back of the green. This even though I'm using a level 4 ball and my irons & wedges are tuned for maximum spin. Again, just not very realistic.

It will not let you chip farther than a certain distance (I think it's about 40 feet). I know I've hit chips farther than that so I see no reason to artificially limit the length of chips. It also will occasionally not let you putt from off the green.

To win a tournament, you have to average about 8 or 9 under par per round. When's the last time you saw a pro shoot -30 in a tournament?

You can't read the slope of the green until you're on it (or close enough to chip). So from the fairway, you have no idea where to leave the ball to give yourself an uphill putt. Even the flyby is of limited use.

The user interface is clunky. There are too many screens where you have to press to continue. It would also help if they were consistent about which button is required to continue. Sometimes it's +, sometimes it's A; you just never know.

When you're playing against an AI opponent (a match play even for example) the game will move your opponents ball to give him an easier shot. I was playing at Turnberry in a match play event and the AI player hit his ball into a bunker, right up against the face. There's no way he should have had any shot other than a pitch out. But the game moved his ball back so that he could reach the green. And he did. I've seen the same thing happen when the AI golfer hits a ball up into a stand of gorse bushes.

If you hit your ball into a hazard, you cannot choose where to drop the ball for your next shot. In a similar vein, you can't declare a ball unplayable. Occasionally, when you hit into a water hazard, you will be penalized for out of bounds instead. Big difference sometimes between a penalty stroke with a drop near the hazard versus stroke and distance.

There are often spectators directly in your line of play. You can't hit them so it doesn't affect your shot but it's annoying to have people standing right in front of you when you're about to hit.

You can't completely disable the celebrations after putting out. There is a speed mode that streamlines the game somewhat but it doesn't turn off celebrations. Instead it turns off useful stuff like the flyby before each hole.

The MotionPlus attachment is a huge improvement. The game is unplayable without it.

Overall, the game is decent but the lack of realism cripples it. When I play this game, I can't help but think of what could have been. It's a gigantic disappointment after reading all the hype surrounding it. I was hoping that with the addition of the MotionPlus, the ultimate golf game for the Wii had finally arrived. Unfortunately, that game is still in the future. Links386 was a better golf game 15 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best available golf game out there   August 5, 2009
Nona (CA United States)
Even though the Tiger Woods video game series comes out with a new iteration every year, some of which really aren't all that much better than their predecessors, this year's Wii version represents a true upgrade to the video game golf experience. The fact that the Wii remote allows you to play a golf game by actually swinging the controller was already a great new feature, and now the Wii MotionPlus accessory does a great job of detecting the finer motions in a golf swing.

The Wii MotionPlus accessory eliminates perhaps the biggest complaint with Wii golf games so far - short range putts. While you used to need to make a rather large swing in order for the Wii remote to detect your putt, the Wii MotionPlus adds enough sensitivity to let you actually make small swings for short putts. This adds not only to the realism of the game, but also greatly reduces the frustration of accidentally hitting a 3 foot putt 10 feet past the hole. It's also possible to draw and fade your full shots by closing or opening the clubface appropriately at impact.

The features of the game are fairly similar to previous entries in the Tiger Woods series. There are some additional minigames (such as frisbee golf), which may draw in more casual players, but the core of the game still revolves around playing golf on the considerable number of available courses in the game. In order to unlock some of the in-game courses and players, you will need to complete various challenges in the single player mode of the game, which is rather lengthy. It's pretty neat to be able to play on some of the same courses that recent and upcoming major championships (Torrey Pines, Bethpage Black, Hazeltine, Turnberry, St. Andrew's, etc.) will take place on.

While there is a lot to enjoy in this game, I did feel that the game was not as polished as it could have been. The commentators in this game (Kelly Tilghman and Scott van Pelt) can get rather annoying, and their commentary isn't really as enlightening or entertaining as it could be. Some of the animations in the game are completely off - for example, in match play, your opponents will sometimes take huge swings on tap-in putts: while this has no effect on the gameplay, it detracts from the realism of the game and could have been easily fixed.

Nevertheless, the Tiger Woods series has been so successful that it has basically eliminated all other competition in the "realistic" golf game genre. The only alternatives are cartoony-type golf games in the Hot Shots golf mold (which can be plenty entertaining), so if you're looking for a more realistic video game golf experience, this is the game to get. In light of the MotionPlus accessory, it's probably worth getting this iteration even if you already own last year's.

5 out of 5 stars Wii Golfers will love this   August 5, 2009
Carolyn I. Butler (Yuma, AZ)
A great upgrade to Wii versions of Tiger Woods golf. When used with the Wii Motion Plus it is so much more like playing a real game of golf. Love the weather that is incorporated into the game - played yesterday in the rain and it really changed how the course played.
