5 out of 5 stars Wow...   June 13, 2010

I bought the first Bioshock out of desperation for a good game to play(I never really liked shooters before)and absolutely loved it. So I bought Bioshock 2 shortly after it came out and immediately played it twice in a row. I don't really understand the complaints that its "too much like the first one". In my opinion, 2K kept everything that was really good from the first game, while creating a new story and making the few improvements that were needed(isn't that kinda the point of a sequel?). A perfect example: in the first game, incinerate was the coolest-looking plasmid, but I rarely used it. It was reaaly hard to hit an enemy with it, and even when I had it at level three and augmented with tonics, the splicers didn't seem to really mind being set on fire and just kept right on shooting with perfect aim. In Bioshock 2... equip incinerate, aim reticle, pull trigger, and your ememy screams and runs around like...oh,say...someone who has been SET ON FIRE. MUCH more satisfying. That pretty well sums it up- like the first game, but slightly better. Works for me. All the stuff from the first game works better, and there are several new plasmids and weapons that are REALLY COOL.

I will warn that, at least for me, this game has a hell of a learning curve. The first time I played...yikes! I've never died so many times in one game. However, you can save whenever you want(I would recommend saving OFTEN) and I eventually got my techniques and strategies figuered out, so by the second playthrough I could make the splicers cry. Speaking of strategy, someone at 2K realized how much fun it was in the first game to have to plan out your Big-Daddy battles and added a LOT more of that element to this game. Now you can adopt little sisters and have them gather Adam. This draws out hordes of splicers and makes for some really challenging scenarios- GREAT FUN! You also have to battle Big Sisters who are tough and fast, forcing you to really plan out your strategy in detail.

My one complaint is that one time the sound glitched-out on me for half a level. This is nowhere near as bad as the frequent sound and framerate glitches of the first game but it was still annoying. Nevertheless, like the first game, the number of weapons, abilities, and upgrades and the variety of combinations in which to use them makes for tremendous replay value. Add to that six different endings and online multiplayer and this game gives you nearly endless fun.

5 out of 5 stars Better and easier than first Bioshock.   June 3, 2010

I like the easier hacker games in this game. The original Bioshock had difficult hacker games that were numerous. I often times used a buy out for the first one. In the sequel, I loved the replacement. It is easier, quicker, and still challenging (but not frustrating). the story is suspenseful and interesting.

I have more confidence being a big daddy protected by armor and having WAY more slots for your spices. Fighting the big daddies was hard enough in the first without stumbling with the controls; switching from plasmids to weapons. You can use both in the sequel. I loved the choices you have to make throughout in dealing with little sisters and various characters. There are consequences with your actions and it is sometimes challenging to be good. You can harvest little sisters; which is especially cruel being that you are a big daddy. I had the most fun adopting little sisters and protecting them while they collect Adam. It took some strategy before hand, something that i did not enjoy as much as in the first.

There is no lack of freshness in this game, which is too often the bitter cries from the fans of the original. It adds to what we know of Rapture, and it further involves us in confronting the political shake-up and all out civil war that made Rapture synonimous with plagued insanity. It involves the moral tale that man in never truely happy, and he seeks out to destroy his own creations.

All this talk about the sequel must make you think that I didn't like the first. I loved the first Bioshock immensely! This series is my new favorite. It's dark, and scary, and very suspenseful. The first time I saved all the little sisters I heard a bone chilling scream. I really scared me. I knew it was the big sister, but still it took me off guard. I felt cornered and trapped. Desperate to survive. She moved quick. Damn quick! And jumped everywhere in ways I couldn't. Only by playing smart, and hitting hard, did I survive. I had so much fun playing this game.

If you liked the first, you should like this too. Great art and presentation.

5 out of 5 stars (9.2) Bioshock 2 - "First Person Shooters DREAM!"   June 2, 2010
Gameconsoleguys (St louis)

Excellent gun-play, beautiful graphics, interesting story, make this a must own for sure.

Bioshock 2 blows the first one out of the water because the weapons are much better, the gun-play is better, in my opinion the pace is more intense. (no more spending and hour getting 6 bullets to shoot out of a rusty gun that doesn't even leave a mark when you hit something), no this is a revamped version that deserves purchase.

The reason this one didn't score higher review scores than the first was because the first was so over hyped (Lot of advertising $$ paid to review sites), and over rated there was no where to go for reviews when Bioshock 2 came out.

Has great mulitplayer as well and is fun to replay through.

The gun fights and the AI make for some fantastic battles!

BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars Expected More, Got Less.   May 30, 2010
Twins Daddy (Atlanta, GA)
This is a very fun game until a major BUG freezes your PS3...Then you'll want to set it on fire! There should be no bugs in a game that's already been delayed by several months and I have a very low tolerance for this kind of stuff. I recommend you save your game every time you do something significant (waste an Alpha or big sister, help a little sister harvest ADAM, buy new plasmids or tonics, etc.) Above all, SAVE BEFORE you go to a Gatherer's Garden!

This game is designed with unusually long periods between autosaves, which it does once you complete an "area" of Rapture. It is also designed so it can take hours to thoroughly cover one of these areas. Common sense should dictate that these are counterproductive, especially in a buggy game. For example, in Dionysus Park I was literally at the end of this level and had 485 ADAM after spending a few hours poking around every nook and cranny there. Convinced I had done and seen it all, I went to a Gatherer's Garden after receiving a "special gift" from the rescued little sisters. I purchased new plasmids, tonics, slots and had less than 100 ADAM left when I chose "preview" for one of the remaining plasmids available for purchase. Then I only heard the audio and my PS3 LOCKED UP! As you probably know, once this happens you're screwed.

So after a reboot, pretty much everything I had done in Dionysus Park was LOST. It was weird because it looked like some things I had previously searched remained searched (trash cans, corpses)...But I had to rescue ALL of the little sisters again, protect them while harvesting ADAM again, defeat the big sister again. I was NOT happy. I chalked it up to a fluke occurrence. The following day I reluctantly went through Dionysus Park again and cleared maybe 75% of Fontaine Futuristics. Once again I went to a Gatherer's Garden after defeating a big sister. This time I purchased a plasmid upgrade, only heard the audio play and then my PS3 locked up again. Then I realized this is not a fluke. There is a MAJOR BUG hiding in the Gatherer's Garden portions of this game just waiting to knock you back to the beginning of each section. From this point on, I saved after every significant accomplishment and recommend you do the same.

As for the game itself, it's a beautiful landscape as it should be since it's more or less the same as the original Bioshock with enhancements. Playing as a big daddy was hardly distinguishable from playing through the original against the big daddies, and that's unfortunate. Use the drill at all and it runs out of fuel in just a few seconds. Then you're back to shooting guns and plasmids at splicers, other big daddies and big sisters. You rescue little sisters and guard them while they collect ADAM. Go to the next area of Rapture and repeat. And that's really the failure of this game. It's probably the most repetitive game I've played in the past year. Areas of Rapture are strung together with completely linear strolls through the ocean that serve no other purpose than to get you from point A to point B. You scavenge around for items of use, listen to recordings and transmissions from other Rapture residents who guide you around and fight enemies around every corner...Just like the original.

The game also suffers by forcing you to search for and purchase items to prepare for one-sided battles. Early in the game, big sisters will kill you over and over so you simply step out of the Vita Chamber and wait for them to come to you and kill you again while you throw everything you have at them and they suffer very limited damage. Nothing quite like a half-dozen respawns to finish off a single enemy. Then you end up with no useable ammo, no first aid kits, no Eve hypos...So you're forced to scavenge and purchase these items again to prepare for the next big battle. As an example, I repeatedly froze and hit a single big sister with anti-personnel rounds until gone, rocket spears until gone, phosphorous buck until gone and she kept killing me over and over regardless of what I did. Finally, she had a tiny bit of RED left on her damage meter and I froze her multiple times in a row and fired 10 solid slugs right into her belly before she killed me again. The ridiculousness of battles like this take away from the gaming experience...

Finally, Bioshock 2 could be viewed as not much more than additional DLC for Bioshock...The games are that similar. Fans of the original will LOVE this, while those expecting more will be disappointed. There are technical improvements, to be sure, specifically in the area of plasmids, tonics, weapons and the simultaneous use of them...But with months of development delays, shouldn't we be treated to something more than just the same game with marginal improvements? For a $59.99 list price, I think so.
