Amazon.com Product Description
Cross Edge is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between five major Japanese game publishers. Nippon Ichi Software, Capcom, Namco Bandai, Gust, and Idea Factory have joined forces to create a Strategy RPG unlike any other and exclusive to PlayStation 3. Costume system that increases character potency. View larger. | Combo driven attack system. View larger. | Classic RPG level and stats. View larger. | Cross Edge features characters and storylines from popular franchises including: Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Mana Khemia, and Spectral Souls. Cross Edge is action-packed with memorable characters, amazing items, and over-the-top battles to deliver an once-in-a-lifetime gaming experience. Story The story of Cross Edge follows the adventures of hero and heroine York Neely and Miki Aiba. Awaking in a strange world, they are soon sought out by a little girl named May. She tells them that the world around them was created from souls gathered from other worlds and that if this stealing of souls from other places does not stop, sooner or later those other places--that is reality--will disappear forever. To stop this from happening they will have to defeat this new world's evil master by releasing all the souls now confined to his nightmare world. To do this they will need all the special abilities that they possess, as well as the help they will gain from others that they meet on their travels. Gameplay Cross Edge is a traditional Japanese role-playing game complete with world map, random battles, level grinding, item combining/creation using alchemy, etc. It also features heroes and villains from game franchises published by Gust, Capcom, Nippon Ichi, Namco Bandai and Idea Factory. As players set about freeing the trapped souls supporting the nightmare world that they are stuck in, they engage in turn-based team battles. This is where the characters from previous games come in. Players must enlist them to join in party-based battles. Success in these battles is based on the ability to string together specific moves into chain attack sequences, which in turn unlock even stronger combinations when successful. Players can also increase their characters' stats and abilities by acquiring additional costumes called 'forms' and redressing their characters in them. Female characters physical appearances can also be changed based on the form they're wearing. The goal of the game is to release souls. You can find and collect souls by searching around area maps. Exposure to souls can grant players items or unlock events. Along with soul related events, maps will also point players to other helpful locations such as event points, points at which other events may occur, and save points, where you can save your game as well as buy, sell and trade items. Key Features - Cross Edge combines classic RPG combat with a grid-based Strategy RPG combat to create a hybrid battle system. In combat, a square grid will appear beneath the units. Some units are better at close combat and others at a distance, so players must strategically move their units to battle enemies.
- In combat, some units can toss up enemies and chain combo various moves for extra damage, like in a fighting game.
- By using characters from Gust titles, players can use alchemy to craft weapons.
- Change costumes to increase character’s stats and abilities, and in some cases revealing cut scenes.
- Explore dungeons to run, jump and attack.
- Cross Edge is bilingual. Players have the option to choose between English or Japanese voiceovers.
- Add to your PlayStation trophy collection as you play through the game.

GOOD VISUAL ISN'T EVERITHING May 20, 2010 ANTONIO JOSE FADUL PORRAS (Florida, USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I DON'T LIKE PEOPLE THAT REVIEW A GAME AFTER 1 HOUR OF GAMEPLAY, I REALLY LIKE RPGS, THIS ONE HAVE VERY BAD VISUALS BUT THATS NOT ALL, I BECOME ADICTED TO THIS GAME, AFTER 50 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY I STILL PLAYING AND FOUND NEW STUFF, THE COMBOS AND EX COMBOS ARE AMAZING, THE CUSTOM SYSTEM FROM WEAPONS ARE REALLY FUN, THE CHARACTERS ARE GREAT, AND THE HYSTORY LINE IS NOT SO GREAT, BUT IS YOU WANT A FITHING SMASHING BOTTON RPG, HERE IS THE ONLY AND BEST OPTION, COMBINE RPG, STRATEGIC AND SMASHING BOTTOM FITHING ALL IN ONE, I PERSONALY LIKE THIS GAME MORE THAN DISGAIA.
Very Very Underrated RPG February 23, 2010 RKOFANT (Chicago, IL) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had to write this review because I feel this game is horribly underrated. I DO think that this game has a very specific player in mind and that it is NOT for everyone. If you are a person this game is targeting; however, you will love it.
If you don't like a challenge and need to be spoonfed then this game is not for you. You really need to sit down learn the game, how it plays and what type of stratgies to implement. If you only play this game for a couple hours you probably won't get into it. You need to expect hours upon hours of grinding, customizing, collecting, stealing specific items from specific monsters in specific areas, backtracking etc. There is nothing casual about it.
If you don't know the characters it won't mean you won't like the gameplay, but you won't have much more than a superficial connection to them. Since the plot is very secondary to the gameplay it may not matter. That being said if you are a big fan of Disgaea, Ar Tonelico, darkstalkers or spectral souls you will have at least some affection for them.
Of the 3 people I know that played it 2 loved it and one hated it. Nothing inbetween. I really feel this game caters a little more to an older gamer who knew the days when games were downright difficult and sometimes frustrating to beat. If you want to put in the effort and are a crazed completionist this game will keep you busy for a long time. I can't say just because you like jrpgs you will like this since the genre is broad, but you may have a better chance of liking it.
Overall I am frustrated with the game critic sites that bash nitche games and hurt sales so that the fans will never see similar games released here. I believe it is a disservice to their readers. A game's context needs to be taken into account. I am not saying the game does not have some notable flaws, but don't compare it to Uncharted 2.
I bought it for (...) on sale, but had I known it was this good I would have bought it the day it came out for (...). Rent it or buy it on the cheap, then peruse some FAQs online. If the game sounds appealing to you the risk may be rewarded.
Grind February 1, 2010 Kevin Handy (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game requires too much grinding to be any fun. Weapons are weak, so you have to spend an enormous amount of time grinding up to be able to survive in the next level. During battles, you should have a book to read while you wait for the enemies to attack, round after round after round, until you finally get your short turn, then you get to wait for the enemies to attack, round after round after round again. You get to set up the starting battle formation of your party, but usually this is ignored and your characters will just get randomally placed in the battle screen. Your armor have numerous slots for accessories, but these accessories are mostly unavailable. Expect to get killed off immediately whenever you get to a new area, until you grind up at least another 5 levels or so. And don't forget to grind up your weapons attacks too. Also grind up the synthesis, upgrade, and composite skills too. And the costume changes they describe in the info, expect them to cut your HP in half, at least, and most of your other stats too.
Nothing Redeeming about this January 23, 2010 G. Nguyen (CA) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
PROS:
Only if you have absolutely nothing else to play!
CONS:
Characters are almost always in the same pose throughout the entire game.
Hardly a plot, no NPC's, devoid of them, and this game is devoid of enjoyment.
Imagine searching for hidden locations and objects. Now imagine doing that for 40+ hours. That's this game.
CrossEdge did better in the US than in Japan, it flopped. I can see why they avoid this game like the plague. The idea was interesting for a cross over game with Namco Bandai, Capcom, Gust, Idea Factory and Compile Heart, but was executed poorly. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Skip this game.
Good Game November 17, 2009 Rhett Vandiver 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
It's a great game. It was given to me in original packaging and everything so I'm happy with the purchase. Also the game is freaking sweet, I love all the free downloadable content. It makes for a great experience.
